Green Ways Day at Presentation Center
Cindy Blain, Marketing Director

"Green Ways Day at Presentation Center "
A fun, outdoor “green” event for the whole family to learn more about eco-friendly living

Spend a Sunday afternoon strolling this beautiful Los Gatos retreat with your family and friends to learn more about eco-friendly living. Since you’re already recycling and using compact fluorescents, come learn about other, outdoorsy ways to help the environment: bees & how to help bees, native birds of prey and respect for wild places, organic gardening & composting, native plants & gardens. Enjoy meditative Native American drum music. See a living roof with plants on it, take a nature hike, and learn how all life is sacred and bound together. Everyone is welcome! Green Ways Day will be Sunday, September 30th from 1 to 4pm at Presentation Retreat & Conference Center, 19480 Bear Creek Road, Los Gatos – just 2 miles up Bear Creek Road from Hwy 17. Suggested donation: $5 per person. Please R.S.V.P.to (408) 354-2346 or cblain@presentationcenter.org. Visit www.presentationcenter.org for more info.
With the first LEED Gold Certified building in Santa Clara County, Presentation Center has been “going green” for a long time – and it is truly an ongoing process to find new ways to behave more sustainably. Green Ways Day gives Presentation Center and their “green” partners a chance to share what they’ve learned with you as you begin (or continue) the process of going green.
Come see the beehives and learn what’s happening to one of our best pollinators with Henninger Hill Apiary and the Santa Clara Valley Beekeepers Guild; meet native birds of prey from Sky Hunters and discover why we need to keep our wild places wild; and find out about organic gardening with the U.C. Master Gardeners and why composting is a good idea from the Santa Clara County Master Composters. Talk with volunteers from the California Native Plant Society about how native plants in your garden will help local wildlife. Meet Alrie Middlebrook, the author of the new book Designing California Native Gardens: The Plant Community Approach to Artful Ecological Gardens, which can help you build a beautiful, eco-friendly garden.
Explore nature on a gentle nature hike around the pond with a Youth Science Institute Instructor, and listen to the Native American drum music of the Santa Cruz Drum Circle rolling over the water – it sounds like the heartbeat of the Earth. Take a tour of the award-winning straw bale / solar power dining hall with its 3,400 sq ft living roof…yes, plants on the roof! (Sorry, there is no goat on the roof). You’ll also get to eat delicious, healthy goodies from the kitchen, which include organic produce from the organic garden. Visit the new Presentation Ecology Resource Center, where you can explore going green in more depth with the help of our volunteer “Green Sisters”
